Haley is a newly certified instructor and has now joined the Balanced Breath Team to bring you fabulous yoga classes! I am thrilled to have her as a part of the team because of her calm demeanor and her passion for yoga. I wanted some of you to be able to understand where she is coming from on her own Yoga Journey. Here are a few questions I asked her about her practice and herself.

Tell us about yourself. Where are you from and what are some of your favourite things to do?

My name is Haley Rooney, I am 20 years old and have lived in Arthur my whole life. I am currently attending university in Guelph, majoring in Political Science. My main interests include yoga, paddle boarding, travelling, and fashion. I also love spending time with my family and friends.

Do you remember what your very first yoga experience was? What did you think of yoga the FIRST time you took a class?

The first time I tried yoga, I most definitely never imagined myself becoming a teacher one day. I was struggling, and was very intimidated by all of the people around me who made it look easy. I gave up a few times, but something about the practice always drew me back in again and again. I came to realize that yoga was about my body and my journey alone, not that of those around me.

Where do you use yoga off of the mat? How has your practice helped you in your ‘real life’?

Using yoga off the mat and in my everyday life is something that I am still working on. It takes constant practice and reminding to translate the values that we are taught on the mat into real life. I think that the most important thing that yoga has brought into my life is the concept of ahimsa or non-violence. Non-violence towards yourself, others, and the rest of the world. Remembering that I am doing the best I can, and that I am exactly where I am supposed to be in this moment and not judging or criticizing myself too harshly has been very beneficial to my life and happiness.

What is your favorite limb of the yoga path?

My favourite limb of the yoga path is pranayama. Pranayama encompasses the breath and breathing techniques. There are many breathing techniques that I use on a daily basis, often without even noticing that I am doing so that I have learned through yoga. These techniques all serve different purposes, and in my opinion are very beneficial for calming the mind and body.

What is your favourite style of practice at this point in your life?

At this point in my life I love vinyasa flow style classes. My favourite classes and flows are those which are creative and allow you to express yourself. I love practicing hand-stands and shoulder-stands, those are the most fun for me to experiment with.

What do you hope you can provide for students that come to your classes?

I hope that I can provide anyone who comes to my class with the skills and knowledge to practice yoga in a way that is fun, safe, and respectful to their bodies and their own personal lifestyles. I want to showcase and share the love that I have for this practice, and hopefully be able to transfer that love to others.
